Biography
Bek

Becky is one of the few female exponents of the Uilleann or Irish Pipes in England today. Well renowned as a solo performer and teacher, Becky has performed at folk festivals and events in the UK & Europe for the last 25 years.

Her debut album was released in December 2002 to critical acclaim throughout the folk scene. This was followed by the publication of her tunebook in December 2003 which showcased a selection of compositions from her unique repertoire. 2008 saw the launch of her follow-up album 'Ireland Bridge' which is a potent mix of traditional and new tunes in a variety of settings.

Becky is renowned for her ability to give a distinctive interpretation to traditional tunes on a number of instruments; Uilleann pipes, fiddle, Northumbrian pipes, whistle and duet concertina, and her skill in contemporary composition and arrangement that continue that tradition are a major feature of her music.

In May 2008 Becky performed with Russian musical legend Boris Grebenshikov and his 'International Ensemble' to a capacity audience at the Royal Albert Hall. Since then she has toured with him as part of his legendary group Aquarium across Russia and the former Soviet Union to sell out crowds, and where he is a household name. These recent concerts with Aquarium International have been instrumental in widening her musical perspectives and have included performances at some of Europes most prestigious venues including the Dublin Olympia Theatre, Kiev Opera House, the Arcimboldi Theatre in Milan, and at the Creation of Peace festival in Kazan where they performed to a crowd in excess of 170,000 people. During her career she has appeared on stage alongside many notable contemporary artistes such as Fairport Convention, Michael McGoldrick, Shooglenifty, Dervish, and Paddy Keenan, 'dottily eclectic' Suns of Arqa who (amongst other things) combined Uilleann pipes with Sitars, and dub reggae rhythms and recorded a radio 1 session with them. She has also performed with Lindisfarne and also with The Chieftains on their album 'A Chieftains Celebration' in 1988 after a series of performances with them in Dublin as part of the City's Millennium celebrations. A finalist in the 'BBC Young Tradition' awards for several years she also played quite extensively with the wonderfully titled Krampouez Lipous Orchestra from Brittany. She has played with many bands in and around the North of England most notably an early incarnation of The Rub, the ground-breaking Reed Riot (with fellow piper David Lim), Gan Ainm, and The Infamous Daw Green Stompers to name but a few.

2009 sees a collaboration with talented singer-songwriter Jason Offen featuring his melancholic vocals, guitar and songwriting, accompanied by Becky on mandolin, fiddle and low whistle. Together they weave a characteristic and unique sound, which complements and contrasts her more traditional solo and duo performances.

Ancient History ...
Becky started playing recorder at the age of 3 and quickly moved on to Piano and whistle. Aged 8 years she started classical violin and musical theory lessons. It was at this time that she developed a keen interest in traditional folk music which she started playing on the fiddle and whistle. Aged 11 her piping career began on the Northumbrian Smallpipes, and eventually she became the first person to obtain a Music G.C.S.E and O/A level on the Smallpipes. She performed at many music festivals (traditional and classical) in the North East, and also made several local radio and TV appearances. At this time (aged 16) she finally managed to obtain a set of Uilleann or Irish pipes and concentrated on these and the Northumbrian Smallpipes on which she recorded tracks for the Northumbrain Pipers Society Album 'New Horizons'.
