Becky is one of the few female exponents of the Uilleann or Irish Pipes in England today. Well renowned as a solo performer and teacher, Becky has performed at folk festivals and events in the UK & Europe for the last 20 years.
Her debut album was released in December 2002 to critical acclaim throughout the folk scene. This was followed by the publication of her tunebook in December 2003 which showcased a selection of compositions from her unique repertoire.
Becky is renowned for her ability to give a distinctive interpretation to traditional tunes on a variety of instruments; Uilleann pipes, fiddle, Northumbrian pipes, whistle and duet concertina, and her skill in composing and arranging tunes that continue that tradition are a major feature of her music.
She has played with many bands in and around the North of England including popular celtic bands The Rub, Reed Riot (with fellow piper David Lim), Gan Ainm, Gaelforce and The Daw Green Stompers to name but a few. Collaborations have included performances with Lindisfarne, and also with the Chieftains on their album 'A Chieftains Celebration' in 1988 after a series of performances with them in Dublin as part of the Citys Millennium celebrations. She was also a finalist in the 'BBC Young Tradition' awards for several years.
Less traditionally ...
A recent collaboration with talented singer-songwriter Kirk McElhinney finds Becky in an exciting acoustic adventure featuring Kirk's magical vocals, guitar and songwriting. Accompanied by her traditional instruments (Uilleann pipes, fiddle and whistles), together they create a unique new sound in contemporary acoustic music, drawing influences from outside of the tradition including Blues, Jazz and Roots Music.
Becky has also played with Manchesters 'dottily eclectic' Suns of Arqa who (amongst other things) combined Uilleann pipes with Sitars, and dub reggae rhythms and recorded a radio 1 session with them. She also played quite extensively with the wonderfully titled Krampouez Lipous Orchestra from Brittany.
... and more recently
Becky is a stalwart of the Manchester and Leeds thriving Irish music session scene which has lead to her latest collaborations with Dave Kosky (guitar) and Danny Cameron (box), and also with Manchester based musicians Frances O'Rourke (fiddle) and Pat O'Reilly (bouzouki). She has appeared on stage alongside notable contemporary artistes such as Michael McGoldrick, Shooglenifty, Dervish, and Paddy Keenan amongst others.
Performances with guitarist Paul Cowham and the infamous 'Spence' both of whom can be heard on her debut album. Huddersfield's well established Irish band Through the hedge (backwards), Ceilidh band Shinjig, and can also be seen providing the music for Sowerby Bridge's local Rapper sword dance side 'St Aidans Rapper' on occasion!
Ancient History ...
Becky started playing recorder at the age of 3 and quickly moved on to Piano and whistle. Aged 8 years she started classical violin and musical theory lessons. It was at this time that she developed a keen interest in traditional folk music which she started playing on the fiddle and whistle. Aged 11 her piping career began on the Northumbrian Smallpipes, and eventually she became the first person to obtain a Music G.C.S.E and O/A level on the smallpipes. She performed at many music festivals (traditional and classical) in the North East, and also made several local radio and TV appearances. At this time (aged 16) she finally managed to obtain a set of Uilleann or Irish pipes and concentrated on these and the Northumbrian Smallpipes on which she recorded tracks for the Northumbrain Pipers Society Album 'New Horizons'.
